Aluminum Checkered Plate: One Third the Weight of Steel Plate
This lightweight aluminum checkered plate (five bar / diamond pattern) is produced from 1060, 3003 and 5052 alloy in thickness 1.5-10mm, width 1000-1850mm, standard sheet size 1220x2440mm. With a density of 2.70 g/cm³ against 7.85 g/cm³ for carbon steel, the same sheet thickness delivers only about one third of the steel weight, which directly cuts freight cost, crane time and installation labour.

Aluminum versus steel plate at a glance
| Property | Aluminum checkered plate | Carbon steel checkered plate |
|---|---|---|
| Density | 2.70 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
| Weight per m² at 2mm | About 5.5 kg | About 15.7 kg |
| Weight ratio | 1 | About 3 |
| Surface at 2mm sheet | Natural oxide film, no painting needed | Galvanized or painted to resist rust |
| Handling on site | Two workers can carry a 1220x2440mm sheet | Forklift or crane usually required |
Weight saving that shows up in your freight bill
Ocean freight and inland trucking are billed on weight. Because one tonne of aluminum checkered plate covers roughly three times the surface area of the same tonne of steel plate, a single 20GP container can ship about three times the covered square metres within the same payload limit. Importers using aluminum tread plate for truck bodies, trailer floors and walkways typically reduce shipping cost per square metre by 50 to 65 percent while keeping the anti-slip pattern and the load rating required by the application.

Easy transport and easy installation
- Lower payload per sheet: a 2mm x 1220 x 2440mm sheet weighs about 16 kg instead of 47 kg in steel, so sheets are handled by hand without lifting equipment.
- Higher container utilisation: weight-limited containers carry about three times the sheet area, lowering landed cost per square metre.
- Faster site work: lighter sheets are quicker to position, drill and fix, cutting man-hours on ramps, stair treads and platform decking.
- No rust protection chain: aluminum forms its own oxide layer, so no galvanizing, priming or repainting steps and no extra weight from zinc coating.
- Workable with standard tools: sheets can be cut, bent, punched and welded with normal workshop equipment, and 5052 grade suits bending and marine use.

Applications by industry
| Industry | Typical parts | Why this plate fits |
|---|---|---|
| Truck and trailer building | Body side panels, trailer floor, mudguards, tool boxes, tipper liners, tailgate skins | Lower kerb weight means more legal payload, and 5052 grade resists road salt |
| Automotive and RV | Running boards, step plates, caravan and motorhome skins, interior floor trim, battery boxes | Sheets can be bent and cut in a normal workshop, so custom fitments stay light |
| Construction and access | Stair treads and nosings, platform decking, scaffold planks, ramps, trench covers, site walkways | Five bar pattern gives slip resistance while two workers can still carry a full sheet |
| Industrial equipment | Machine base plates, control cabinet cladding, conveyor side guards, workshop benches, generator housings | No painting or galvanizing step, and lighter panels reduce frame loading |
| Cold storage and food plants | Freezer room floors, wall protection panels, door kick plates, hygiene partitions, trolley decks | Mill finish is easy to wash down and does not rust at low temperature and high humidity |
| Marine and offshore | Boat and pontoon decks, dock gangways, hatch covers, jetty walkways, lifeboat platforms | 5052 alloy with natural oxide film handles salt spray without a coating system |
| Architecture and interior | Lift and escalator cladding, column protection, feature wall panels, bar and counter fronts, signage backing | Anodized or PVDF finish gives a decorative non slip surface at low dead load |
| Energy and utilities | Cable trench covers, transformer room flooring, switchgear plinths, solar mounting walkways | Light panels are quicker to lift on site and non magnetic for electrical rooms |

Where weight saving matters most
- Weight limited transport: when the truck, container or aircraft is limited by payload rather than volume, aluminum checkered plate lets you finish the job with fewer trips.
- Roof and upper floor work: cladding and walkway panels on mezzanines, roofs and canopy edges add far less dead load than steel.
- Remote sites: sheets can be flown or carried to locations where a crane or forklift cannot reach.
- Frequent removal and reassembly: access covers, hatch plates and modular platform decks stay manageable when handled by hand.
- Export projects: lower gross weight directly reduces ocean freight and destination handling charges on every shipment.
Pattern and size selection guide
- Five bar: the standard anti slip choice for trailer floors, ramps and stair treads; best grip in the walking direction.
- Diamond: popular for decorative cladding, tool boxes and vehicle trim where looks matter as much as grip.
- Lentil: a denser small pattern often used for machine covers and interior panelling.
- 1220x2440mm: the most economical sheet for container loading; other widths from 1000mm to 1850mm and lengths up to 6000mm are cut to order.

Packing and shipping
Sheets are stacked on seaworthy wooden pallets, wrapped with protective film and HDPE sheeting, then steel-strapped. Standard loading is 20GP or 40GP with edge protection to avoid pattern damage during transit. Mixed thickness orders and cut-to-size pallets are available so your site receives only the sizes it needs, avoiding wasted freight space.
